Since 1991, the Day of The African Child is celebrated on this day June 16th to create awareness of the June 16th, 1976 student march in Soweto, South Africa. Nearly tens of thousands of black students marched to display their disapproval of the Black Education Act that segregated students by their race. Hundreds of students were shot and killed by security forces while standing up for their right to an education. It is also a day to raise awareness to improving the education of children living across Africa.
